As part of my master's program, I participated in a 20-week project executed in collaboration with six students from the Games and Interaction program at the HKU. I joined this team as a developer. We worked together with Theatre Walhalla, which is a small theatre in Rotterdam, on the project Amor Fati. This was an experimental digital theatre performance where film, digital images and games come together to form one experience. The online premiere of the performance was on December 24th 2020 and has been enjoyed by hundreds of people since then.
Our goal within this project was to create the digital cut scenes, three games, and the online environment of the performance. My main task was the development of one of these games: a karaoke game where the user can make their own version of a song written for the performance. To realize this, I worked closely together with the interaction designer and the artists on our team. The game was built in Unity.
I also worked on a second game, which is a bubble protection game. The prototype for this game was made by one of my teammates, and it was my job to add minor improvements such as camera movements, animations, game element rotations, adding a new sprite and adding sound effects.
I found it incredibly educational to work on this project. Not only was I able to develop my skills in Unity, but more importantly I learned a lot about the whole production pipeline from concept phase to final result. Working closely together with game artists was also incredibly insightful, as well as working for a real client.
